The original Latin text goes back to the 14th Century and is attributed to Pope Innocent VI. Here, it is given a contemporary melody with a six-part vocal harmony. The Ave Verum song can be used for Communion and Exposition.
LYRICS
Ave, verum corpus natum
de Maria Virgine:
vere passum, immolatum
in cruce pro homine:
cuius latus perforatum
unda fluxit et sanguine:
esto nobis praegustatum,
in mortis examine.TRANSLATION:
Hail to thee, true body of Christ;
Born of the Virgin, Mary;
Who suffered sacrifice for human kind;
whose side was pierced and flowed
with water and blood.
Be for us sustaining
in the throes of death.
