Mass of St Bernadette – new translation

Mass of St Bernadette – new translation

A new Mass setting – Mass of St Bernadette – using the text as set in the revised translation of the Roman Missal, was written in 2009 especially for the Archdiocese of Birmingham’s annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. The pastoral theme that year was The Path of Bernadette, hence the title of the setting.

As has been the custom in recent years, the music for the pilgrimage liturgies was led by Jo Boyce, Mike Stanley and Andrew Ross from CJM MUSIC, alongside a team of able volunteers. This new setting proved extremely successful during that week of pilgrimage and has also proven popular in the training, INSET and workshop sessions we have done in the past year or so, helping schools and parishes prepare for the implementation of the new translation of the Mass.

It’s not officially published yet, but we’re working on it: It’s been approved through the Bishops’ Conference panel and will soon be released, along with 5 other new settings, in “Rejoice n Sing Volume 3 – Musical Settings for the Revised Mass Translation“.  Also available on CD.

Meanwhile, here’s a sneak preview so you can try it yourself and let us know how it goes. Email our office and we’ll send you a preview of the Music too, in PDF format.

Summer Greetings from Mike

Mike’s been absent from the frontline of our ministry work for about 6 months now and understandably, many of our friends and supporters have been wondering how he’s doing. He’s sent the follow brief update:

“As [my wife] Yvonne and I return from a private pilgrimage to Lourdes, we have had time to reflect on the past six months and on the many blessings we have received in that time, not least through the prayers of so many. A Mass was offered for your intentions and for your thoughtfulness.

I am keeping myself occupied, exploring creatively new Mass settings for the revised translation of the missal, work that I have been involved in over the past two years or so.

As my treatment continues, I am spending some privileged time at home with my family.
God is good…”

How Can We Keep From Singing – Behind the songs part 1

Exploring the New Roman Missal with Heads of R.E.

On 16 March the Heads of RE from Shrewsbury Diocesan Secondary schools met for their termly conference. The conference convened in the Parish Hall at St Columba’s in Chester to discuss current issues such as Celebrating RE month – a national initiative from the RE Council for England and Wales; The Year of Catholic Education; the Marian Year in our  Diocese and Section 48 Inspection procedures.

In the afternoon we welcomed Jo Boyce of CJM music, who gave an informative  presentation on the new Missal soon to be introduced. Jo guided us through the historical background to the Missal and highlighted what the changes were going to be and why.  She did this with her usual flair and of course great musical talent!

Pat Barker, Assistant Director of Schools (Secondary RE) for the Diocese of Shrewsbury is seen here presenting Jo with  flowers in gratitude for the role she played in a busy and successful Conference.

Songs of the Prodigal – Lenten Tour

Songs of the Prodigal – Lenten Tour

This spring, Jo will be flying solo – leading an intimate evening of songs and reflection for Lent.  With guitar in hand and regular band members by her side, Jo will perform a gentle acoustic set – including songs old and new – to aid us on our personal Lenten journeys.

Jo admits it will be a little strange performing without Mike, having been a virtually inseparable duo for 15 years now. But we know that Mike will certainly be there in spirit and by the wonders of video technology, will actually make a brief appearance as part of the presentation too.

A Message from Mike

A Message from Mike

As most of our loyal supporters will now be aware, Mike, one half of the Boyce & Stanley duo, has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and will be away from the CJM frontline for some time, while he undergoes treatment.

Mike and his wife,  Yvonne would like to thank everyone who has expressed their concern and sent their love and prayers at this difficult time caused by Mike’s illness.

“It continues to be a struggle and we very much value your ongoing prayers.  Thank you also for continuing to give us time and space as a family to try to come to terms with things – even though we can’t always fathom it…’ God is Good’.”
